SUN PROFILE
In describing what she calls “my three loves”—music, fashion and humanitarianism— singer, songwriter and entertainer SUN busts boundaries and combines joyful music with personal discovery. Sun started her Mandarin pop singing career in 2002 and subsequently worked with producers and performers such as Wyclef Jean, Diane Warren, The Underdogs, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager etc.
BACKGROUND
Born Ho Yeow Sun, SUN was a spontaneous performer from her childhood, and wrote her first songs jamming with friends after college, where she’d begun a successful career in youth counseling in Singapore. Having gone through a difficult childhood, SUN was motivated to help others out of their similar struggles with depression, and worked as a counselor for troubled teens from 1996 to 2001.
RECORDING CAREER
Unknown to her, a friend invited a local label executive to one of her performances, who was so impressed that he offered her a contract.
SUN then went on to co-write and release a succession of five groundbreaking Asian pop albums from 2002-2007, that have either gone double or triple platinum and have consistently been listed within the top 5 best-selling albums of the year in the Asian music industry. Then, from 2003-2006, SUN’s first five English-language releases all piled up at the top of the dance club charts of Billboard Magazine and London-based Music Week, making her the first Asian artist in the world to score successive No. 1 dance hits in the global market. SUN has received substantial airplay on all major radio stations in surrounding countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.
After years of hard work, SUN’s singing career has taken off astoundingly, flying her halfway around the world from Asia to the USA. Her debut American single “Where Did Love Go” reached #1 on the Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play “Breakout” Chart in December 2003. Subsequently, three of her singles, “One With You,” “Without Love” and “Gone” reached #1 positions on the Billboard Dance Chart. In addition, “Ends Of The Earth” joined the abovementioned three singles to reach #1 positions on the UK MusicWeek Chart.
It was not long before SUN became the first Asian pop singer to be invited to the Hollywood Film Festival 2003. The following year, 2004, SUN became the only Chinese singer to be invited to the 46th Annual Grammy Awards 2004 and to present at the American Dancestar Music Awards 2004. In 2007, SUN became the first Asian pop singer to grace the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007.
Now, SUN is gearing up to take the U.S. by storm with her first full album project for the international market. She is currently in a high-profile collaboration with superstar writer/producer and Fugees co-founder Wyclef Jean (Shakira, Whitney Houston, Santana, Destiny’s Child). The two teamed up when SUN approached Wyclef about doing the track and video “China Wine” together in 2007. After discovering their great musical chemistry, SUN and Wyclef decided to continue their partnership, with Wyclef as co-writer and executive producer on SUN’s English album, due for release in 2009. SUN recently joined him on his 2008 American and Canadian tour in a featured opening spot—setting her course straight for the global pop mainstream. She was also invited to take on a prominent guest role in Wyclef’s music video “Fast Car,” featuring his duet with Paul Simon.
At Wyclef’s invitation, Sun also attended the following events:
- 2007 MTV Europe Awards: Making her the first Asian pop singer to be invited to the celebrated Awards ceremony.
- SonyBMG Europe Music Awards After Party: Where she performed China Wine with Wyclef.
SUN’s collaboration with Wyclef stands to unite massive audiences of American, European, Caribbean and Asian listeners—much the way the experimentation of brilliant young cross-cultural creatives in such eclectic multi-cultural forms as soca, reggaeton and bhangra have resulted in gigantic, transformative worldwide hits.
Grammy Award winner, songwriter Diane Warren has also left her mark on Sun’s “Embrace” album, with her composition of the song “ 因為有你 (Because You Were There).” One of the most prolific songwriters in the music industry, Diane Warren is the first in the history of Billboard to have seven hits, all by different artistes, on the singles chart at the same time.
True to her philanthropic inclination, Sun also collaborated with legendary icon singer Olivia Newton John on a benefit album compilation entitled “Songs of Hope and Inspiration: Olivia & Friends.” Olivia saw the potential in the collaboration after hearing Sun’s voice, and invited Sun to duet with her on the song “Isn’t It Amazing,” which was produced by Amy Sky. The song commemorated the event—The Great Walk to Beijing—which took place on April 7, 2008 over 21 days and was headed by Olivia who led a team of walkers in the fight against cancer. Both singers agreed to the project over the phone and Sun recorded her vocals in New York while Olivia did her recording in Australia; the artists only met each other at Wyclef Jean’s Platinum Sound Recording Studio to hear the final track. The album also features the voices of renowned singers Keith Urban, Delta Goodrem, Richard Marx and Cliff Richard.
For the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Sun worked together with music composer David Foster & Carole Bayer Sager to submit a song composition titled “The Light.”
HUMANITARIAN WORK
Since establishing her career as a pop artist in April 2002, SUN has used her fame to unite and improve the lives of her listeners. Strongly involved in raising funds for various charitable organizations, SUN is currently involved in community services, which helps 7,070 people on a regular basis. Her humanitarian team was involved in the Tsunami Disaster Relief Operations (2005) and the building of medical clinics in Indonesia.
As a result of SUN’s efforts, the Junior Chamber of Singapore awarded Sun with “The Outstanding Young Person Award” in 2002. This award is presented annually to Singaporeans, between the ages of 21 and 40, who have done significant work in community development. Subsequently, Sun represented Singapore in the global TOYP ceremony and was awarded the “Outstanding Young Person of the World Award” in 2003, given only to 200 people all around the world, clearly showing the extent of SUN’S influence and philanthropic achievements.
Always one to believe in empowering the next generation, SUN has a strong aim to contribute to the ongoing education in China. To date, she has personally donated money from her royalties to build three schools in China: Chong Qing, Gui Zhou and Henan. She also sponsored a computer lab for the school in Liao Ning. Her most recent project took her to Henan Province where her donation of RMB350,000 (S$70,000) paid for the rebuilding of a rundown school, as well as the purchase of teaching facilities such as library resources and multimedia teaching equipment.
SUN’s accomplishments and efforts have also caught the eye of the Chinese government. In June 2007, SUN was appointed the Music Ambassador for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Songfest. She was chosen by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) not merely for her ethnicity as a Chinese, but more specifically for her humanitarian contributions as well as her international success as a music artiste reaching to both the English and Chinese music worlds.
In August 2007, SUN was named the Charity Ambassador of Love for Asia’s first Special Olympic World Summer Games. At the Special Olympics Charity Gala held on August 11, 2007, SUN auctioned off two personal items to raise RMB600,000 (SGD120,000) for the Special Olympic Games. Together with China’s pop singer Sun Nan, she also performed the Special Olympic official theme song “We Are Together.” The song has since been recorded into a music video, which was broadcast on TV and all major shopping centers in Shanghai and Hong Kong during the Special Olympics season.
In February 2008, SUN had the honor of singing the inaugural Mandarin rendition of the 100-year old Olympic Hymn at the opening of the “Olympic Philately & Cultural Tour.” Held at the grand Royal Theatre within the famed Forbidden City, Sun was accompanied by a choir of overseas Chinese from 16 different nationalities.
In May 2008, Sun donated RMB250,000 (SGD50,000) toward the disaster relief work of the earthquake in Sichuan, China. Her latest single, “Eternal Blossom” was broadcast over radio stations as a song of encouragement for all the earthquake victims.
ENTREPRENEUR
With all her achievements, SUN is certainly not resting on her laurels as she is also showing herself to be a most enterprising businesswoman. In July 2005, SUN opened a streetwear boutique, SKIN Couture, at The Marina Square ( Singapore), which carries trendy apparel and accessories from American labels such as True Religion, Antik Denim, Bejeweled, etc. She opened her second store in October 2006 at The Heeren Shops ( Singapore) carrying Japanese labels like Queen Of A Luxury Lover, Double Standard, Chelseagarb, etc. The shop’s largest branch opened in Great World City ( Singapore) a year later on October 7, 2007, carrying the best selections of SKIN. SUN and her SKIN partners also acquired exclusive distribution for Ed Hardy in Singapore, and opened its first flagship store in Asia at The Heeren Shops ( Singapore) on October 29, 2005.
Currently Sun resides in the USA, and travels often to Taiwan and China.
